More Elephants for constitutional Amendments perahera

September 4, 2010

UNP parliamentarian of Galle district, Manusha Nanayakkara says he will support the constitution amendments.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, he said it was the responsibility of the opposition to support the President at a time when he was attempting to develop the country after defeating terrorism.

Earlier of the day, UNP parliamentarians Lakshman Seneviratne and Earl Gunasekera announced at a media briefing that they would support the constitutional amendments.

Commenting on the decisions made by the three party MPs, UNP general secretary Tissa Attanayake said disciplinary action would be taken against them for going against a party decision.

Meanwhile, JVP secretary Tilvyn Silva asked the UNP to ensure that all its MPs who had contested under its ‘elephant’ symbol will vote against the proposed constitutional reforms.

That will alone suffice to prevent the passage of the proposals with a two-third parliamentary majority, he said.

Google Voice fears Dialog & SLT

September 3, 2010

The global search engine Google’s free calls to mobile and fixed lines in the United States and Canada might reduce revenues for local operators like Sri Lankan Telecom (SLT) and Dialog, officials said yesterday.

They said they feared revenues from calls to the US and Canada might drop by 10-15% a year while the fall at Dialog was estimated to be around 5 %.

Between 38,000 to 48,000 minutes worth of calls are made to the US daily by 12,000 to 14,000 callers through SLT, an SLT official said. The call rate to Canada is higher, yet 42,000 to 43,000 minutes by 20,000 to 22,000 callers a day are recorded. In the case of Dialog, the figures are 18,000 minutes a day to the US by 6,000 to 8,000 people and 20,000 minutes by 10,000 to 12,000 people to Canada.

Sana Blames Sanga

September 2, 2010

Sanath Jayasuriya questioned the wisdom of Kumar Sangakkara making his choice of batting line-up for the World Cup public, saying as skipper, Sangakkara should be more responsible about the statements he made.

You can have your opinions as an individual, but when you are in a position of responsibility, you must be careful of what you say in public,” the most capped one-day player in the history of the game told Deccan Herald.Sangakkara’s preferred line-up does not include Jayasuriya, the current captain plumping instead for younger guys like Dinesh Chandimal and Jeevan Mendis who are not in the squad for the tri-series under way.

“I am not disappointed, it’s just an individual making a statement,” the 41-year-old Jayasuriya reiterated.

FaceBook to be regulated in future

September 1, 2010

Early this year, Facebook lovers were shocked to hear of a possible ‘crackdown’ of their favourite social networking site, with the consultation of Chinese cyber experts who have already been challenging the Google search engine.  A week later, it was reported that the government had ordered the suspension of this project.

Recently, this news has resurfaced in the wake of several incidents of privacy issues reported to the Women & Child Bureau (WCB) of the Police. According to some electronic news sources, a leading school in Colombo has threatened students using Facebook with punitive measures as serious as expulsion.

As reliable sources report, there is a possibility of this popular social networking site being regulated in the future, and relevant measures are already under way. Unarguably, Facebook is becoming increasingly popular, not only among Sri Lankan youth, but also adults.

In line with global trends, users find it a useful tool to be networked with new friends as well as old classmates whom they would hardly encounter again in real life. Young filmmakers with no capital, find this an indispensable tool for advertising.

Even moneyed segments of society are enthusiastic fans of Facebook, as both President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Sarath Fonseka used Facebook for presidential election propaganda. As such, is Facebook that evil? Is it a menace to be cracked down? nation
