National Freedom Front (NFF) Chairman Wimal Weerawansa yesterday challenged Sarath Fonseka to a live debate on arms dealings by Fonseka’s son-in-law. Addressing the media, Weerawansa claimed that although Fonseka played down arms dealings by a company owned by his son-in-law as of little importance, it was not so.

The NFF leader claimed that he has evidence that the company had major involvement in arms dealings and invited Fonseka to name two representatives to a live debate on the issue. “I know he is busy with his campaigns, that is why I am asking him to name two representatives for the debate,” he clarified.

By Responding to the challenge made by Wimal Weerawansa, Anura Dissanayake (co-spokesman of Gen. Fonseka) said General Sarath Fonseka is ready for the debate relevant to presidential election but would not be prepared to have anything to do with a swine smeared with feces.

Speaking at a press conference at the media unit of the Common Candidate Mr. Dissanayake said, “At the first press conference of Gen. Fonseka the Leader of the JVP Comrade Somawansa Amarasinghe threw a challenge at President Mahinda Rajapakse to come for a public TV debate with Gen. Fonseka. This is not a new concept; it exists in many countries of the world Read the rest of this entry »

Fonseka’s Solutions for the Economic Posers

Question No.1 out of 5
If elected what would be your priority for the economy?

On priorities:
Stamping out large scale corruption which will immediately increase Sri Lanka’s growth rate by 2 percentage points. Therefore my immediate priority will be to eliminate the cancer of corruption in economic management and redirect the resulting savings into urgent people-friendly development via both the public and private sectors. Unshackling market forces in a corrupt free people and investor friendly economy with the right amount of regulation will unleash Sri Lanka’s potential and boost economic growth and distribution of wealth leading to a better life for all Sri Lankans; not just for a select few.

Without a doubt the resources required to fight the war kept us from reaching our development potential. Ending the war however provided the golden opportunity for the government to release resources for development. But unfortunately these resources are now being amassed by a clan and a few sycophants hovering around the clan, leaving the masses to boil in the pan. The endemic corruption is continuing unabated Read the rest of this entry »

Nearly half a billion dollars in tsunami aid for Sri Lanka is unaccounted for and over 600 million dollars has been spent on projects unrelated to the disaster, an anti-corruption watchdog said Saturday. Berlin-based Transparency International demanded an audit of the money received by the Sri Lankan government to help victims of the Asian tsunami which hit the island on December 26, 2004, killing 31,000 people.

The group’s Sri Lankan chapter said the public have a right to know how the aid money was spent as the tropical nation marked the fifth anniversary of the tsunami. The group alleged that out of 2.2 billion dollars received for relief, 603.4 million dollars was spent on projects unrelated to the disaster. Another half a billion dollars was missing, the group said.

“There is no precise evidence to explain the missing sum of 471.9 million dollars,” the Transparency International statement issued in Colombo added. An “audit should be done by the government to explain the utilisation of the money received and the challenges faced,” the group said.  AFP

As per few reliable sources and hints, Minister of Plantation Industries,  D M Jayaratne is readying to give his support to General Sarath Fonseka in backstage.  he is one of the few remaining members of the original Sri Lanka Freedom Party members. We can confirm this by quoting a statement of Minister Champike Ranawaka.

Minister Ranawaka said a powerful minister of the government who expected to be the prime minister under this government in 2005 is attempting to become the PM when the ‘Swan’ comes to power. However, the government has the capacity to confront any challenge that comes from the opposition said Mr. Ranawaka.

He said this speaking at a press conference held by the JHU at Mahaweli Centre in Colombo (2009/12/24).  The Leader of the group of JHU Parliamentarians Ven. Atharaliye Rathana Thero and its Information Secretary Nishanthe Sri Warnasinghe too were present.
